Home for Peculiar Children

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs had appeared on numerous book lists and had been recommended by a friend. Then I saw the movie preview so bumped it to the top of the list and borrowed it from that friend. It’s not a short book, but it is an easy read, and thanks to traveling and an afternoon at the pool, I read it in about 3 sittings.

It may be one of the most creative and unique books I have ever read and it definitely holds your attention. And it is nothing like what I thought it would be. Simply based on the title and cover of the book, I expected something more along the lines of scary or horror. But it is not at all (apart from some creatures that are not exactly friendly). The author had begun collecting interesting old photos at flea markets, connected with others who collected the same types of photos, and wrote this book (and the subsequent series) based on these photos. I think that is pretty cool. So the photos in the book are real but he created stories about the photos and pieced them together to create this series. I highly recommend the book – get to it before the movie comes out in September. I liked it so much I went right into the next book in the series, Hollow City. Look for that review next!
