Panola Mountain

#1 on my 30 before 30 list is crossed off! A couple weekends ago I drove out to Panola Mountain State Park. I’m surprised I never made it there considering how close it is to the city and where I grew up. I should have done my research better – when I got there I had just missed the guided tour of the mountain which is the only way to climb the mountain. But there are other trails – beautifully shaded, very quiet, and still some great views. I’ll definitely head back to do the guided tour sometime.

Definitely a nice outdoorsy option in Atlanta, especially if you don’t have a whole day to drive to north Georgia.

Tallulah Gorge

The weather has been beautiful and I actually had free time this weekend, so I decided to knock out another hike for my 30 before 30 list. North Georgia has some great hiking options – Tallulah Gorge sounded good for this trip and, as I found out when I got there, it was state park weekend so there was no fee to get in!

The trees aren’t changing yet but the views were still amazing. Some days you can go into the gorge, but this weekend they let the water out, so I’ll have to go back for that. There are easier parts of the hike and harder ones. The hundreds and hundreds of stairs are the harder part – at least going up. Going down was actually kind of scary too. I definitely recommend this for the views and the workout.

I’m so lucky to have great friends to help me cross off items from my 30 Before 30 list. Last weekend I crossed off #9: sit and watch a sunrise. I like to workout in the early morning so I’ve seen my share of glimpses of sunrises. But there is a something amazing about just sitting and watching the sun rise. One of my favorite places is the top of Stone Mountain – so it was the perfect place to get in an early hike and watch the sun rise.

It was a beautiful clear morning – breezy on top of the mountain. Pictures are never as good but it was well worth the early wake up call.

Lands End

2 hikes down – 2 to go (30 before 30)! I honestly just figured I’d do all my hikes in Georgia, or at least the southeast. But I was obviously not thinking out of the box.

Last weekend a friend and I made a visit to San Francisco. Another friend from college moved there about 6 months ago giving us the perfect excuse to head out west. San Fran in July is beautiful – blue skies, breeze off the water, and we brought some warmer weather with us from the east [actually everyone there kept talking about how hot is was….at 76 degrees]. 🙂

We wanted a hike and breathtaking views and we for sure found them. Lands End is at the northwest corner of San Fran – the edge of the continent (wrap your mind around that). Winding and hilly paths, every turn a beautiful view of the cliffs and the Golden Gate Bridge. If you’re in San Fran I highly recommend it.

Kennesaw Mountain

One hike down, 3 hikes to go (30 Before 30, #1)! Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is just north of Atlanta and my friend lives close to there. We have tried for a few months to hike the mountain, but finally fit it, along with my friend visiting from Nashville! It’s a beautiful park with lots of shady trails. It’s about a mile up, not too difficult, and the view from the top is awesome. It was also cool to be there on Memorial Day and read the Civil War historical markers and information (yes, I actually read them). Easy day trip (or part-day trip) from downtown!
