The Clasp

The Clasp by Sloane Crosley took me a little while to get through. Overall I enjoyed it, but it was a little slow at times and I didn’t really enjoy it until the end. It’s a very creative story, centered around an actual famous short story: The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant. One of the characters comes to believe that the jewelry of the story is real and sets out to find it. However, there is little time spent on this specific story line. It’s more about the group of characters and the stages of their friendships, meeting in college, growing up, becoming adults in the real world, some relationships surviving better than others, and each character’s perspective of said relationships. That story line I can completely relate to. It just wasn’t intriguing enough to keep my rapt attention. I did appreciate that the actual short story was included at the end since it was discussed in depth throughout the novel. But I got through it and it is a good middle of the road book – not bad but not great.
