Barefoot Training

I mentioned this briefly in one post back in February and think it’s time for an update! I’m running the Music City Half Marathon again this year and it’s 19 days away!! Last year I ran because I was jobless and had nothing else to do. This year I’m just really loving running AND had a great cause to support. Insert Barefoot Republic. I met Candace when she started interning at work and it was an instant friendship. I had heard of Barefoot Republic and had actually been to the camp to help build before their first summer opening the new location, but Candace was the expert and the passion behind the run.

As the Run Barefoot team, we are raising money for kids to go to camp. 75% of campers to Barefoot receive some kind of financial assistance in order to go. As a team, we have raised over $13,000 so far!! Now I must admit, I didn’t hate training and running by myself last year. But running with a team with a purpose is ten times better. I may not be completely crushed when the race is over…7am runs on Saturdays are not exactly ideal, let’s be real….but I have definitely formed friendships and had a great time in the 3+ months with this team. And am so proud of every person on our team – us halfers ran 11 miles on Saturday! Woot!

Training Barefoot

For the few of you that follow, you maybe have noticed my blog has not been updated in a while. I apologize. My life recently has been a lot of work, training for the half marathon, and sleeping. Nothing too exciting.

But I will update you on the training! Although I ran the Music City Half Marathon last year, I decided to train and fundraise with a group this year…and it has been fantastic. No, I’m not training with or using the creepy-looking barefoot toes shoes. But I AM raising money to help support Barefoot Republic, a nonprofit here in Nashville. Because they state their own mission better than I ever could : To facilitate the development of Christ-centered relationships between individuals who represent diverse racial, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, through an equally diverse platform of artistic, athletic and team building programs.

They really are an amazing organization and have amazing facilities for summer camp. I am proud to help raise money to help kids, who may never otherwise get to go to camp or interact with youth outside their own communities, have the opportunity to go to Barefoot Camp this summer. And training with a team, including my friends and beginning to form new friendships, is just an added benefit.

Training Update

A little less than 3 months until the 1/2 marathon!! I’m really excited but also a little intimidated by the training. My first official week of training was last week (before that I was training for training, hehe). Of course, as training started the snow storm of the decade hit Nashville, which forced me to run at the gym on the treadmill (sorry, not THAT hardcore to run in ice). I had been doing SO well in the cold and was actually enjoying it, especially for a southern gal, but now I’ve gotten used to inside and am much less tolerant of the cold, even after only one week!!! It’s devastating!

Anyway, this week’s goal is going to be running outside again. It was still really wet and snowy this morning, so I gave in and went to the Y….maybe tomorrow??  And I am going to Atlanta mid-week, so it should be at least a few degrees warmer and I’ll have my beautiful parks to run around, so that will definitely be good! I am committed to this training and that is that. May not do it again……but you never know 🙂 Wish me luck!

Training Update

T – 12 days

I started running again after a week-long hiatus of parents visiting, being sick, and going out of town. It was like starting from scratch. But I think the progress was faster. I did 4 days of early morning runs (which I still love), just under 3 miles, same route. My time got a couple minutes better throughout the week to put me back to where I was before the hiatus. Today, M, S, and I went to the park where the 5K will be and attempted to run the actual route. It is very different running in a field/woods than paved sidewalk. I kind of enjoyed it though. We got most of the route, but got confused at one point and back-tracked. It was fairly flat, with only a couple larger hills. I think it’s going to be very doable.

I am starting to get really excited for the race. I don’t really care what time I do it in, I would just really like to do it without walking at all!! I am still working on the eating better. My goal is to fit into the shorts I bought in March when I had lost weight (which I apparently have gained back now….boo).

Training Update

Countdown to Ellie’s Run: 26 days

I have good news and bad news on my training update. Last week was very successfull. I got up in the 5 o’clock hour every morning, Monday through Thursday, and ran my 2.95 mile route, and on Friday, ran a shorter 1.96 miles. I loved running in the morning; it was cool outside and there was very little traffic on the road. I felt great! I also ate better all week.

The bad news for me is that my parents came into town this weekend. I absolutely loved spending the weekend with them, but I didn’t run (or do any exercise) and I ate way too much and not the best food. Anyway, I still have time to make it to my 5K distance and hopefully my trip to the deep south next weekend won’t set me back even more! And this sick I feel coming on will go away ASAP (says my power of positive thinking…..)


Training Update

Ran 2.95 miles yesterday and today, on West End, which isn’t exactly flat. I think I’ll actually be ready for the 5K in a month, and might actually have a decent time. Amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it! If anyone else is Nashville is interested: Ellie’s Run for Africa on June 13 at Percy Warner! (

Now, if I can just start eating better, I’ll really be making progress. I have almost no will power when it comes to sweets and snacking. Any tips…other than to not buy them?? (Problem is they are always at work).
